We’re happy to share that the Winnebago County Housing Authority has again been awarded the Family Self-Sufficiency grant, in the amount of $134,336. This funds our two FSS Coordinators to assist families with the program.
The program collaborates with community resources to assist families to increase their earned income and reduce dependency on welfare assistance and rental subsidies. They enter a contract that is generally five years to help achieve goals that may include tuition for school, buying a home, paying off debt or whatever the family needs to succeed. The program works by placing family rental increases into a housing authority held escrow that is matched by the housing authority. WCHA also provides this program in Stephenson County, and also provides this program free for our neighboring Boone County Housing Authority families. Both WCHA and BCHA have one of the highest family program participation in the State of Illinois--currently 10.3% of WCHA families and 10.3% of BCHA families volunteer to take part in the program. 22 Illinois housing authorities received the award, and WCHA had the fifth highest amount in the state.
